Katowice (German Kattowitz, Silesian Katowice, czech. Katovice) - a city with poviat rights in southern Poland, the seat of the authorities of the Silesian Voivodeship. One of the main centers of the Upper Silesian Industrial District and the largest city in terms of population in the Upper Silesian conurbation.
The beginnings of Katowice date back to the 16th century, when it was an agricultural and forging center, and its rapid development began in the mid-19th century with the development of industry and bringing a railway line to the city. Katowice obtained city rights on September 11, 1865, and then developed rapidly. With around 290 k inhabitants, in December 2020 it was the 11th city in the country in terms of population and 12th in terms of area, with almost 165 km².
Katowice lies on the main national and international road and rail routes. The international airport Katowice-Pyrzowice operates in Pyrzowice. It is an important economic center on a national scale, being a commercial and service center with a significant share of production activities. It is also a center for the concentration of specialized medical services, academic, cultural and sports functions.
